So Should Cargo Protection.

Over the past several years, cargo theft has moved far beyond opportunistic crimes of convenience. Organized groups are now targeting freight with greater coordination, better intelligence, and increasingly sophisticated tactics. The result is billions of dollars in losses across North American supply chains every year.

Industry estimates suggest cargo theft losses have grown from approximately 15 billion dollars in 2020 to nearly 38 billion dollars in 2025, representing an annual growth rate of more than 20 percent. If current trends continue, losses could exceed 45 billion dollars in 2026.

Many fleets still rely on traditional approaches to cargo visibility using tractor-based GPS tracking or post incident reporting. While these tools provide useful information, they were not originally designed to actively monitor trailers, detect suspicious activity in real time, or support rapid response during a developing theft event.

As theft tactics continue to evolve, the industry is beginning to shift toward a new approach. Instead of relying solely on passive visibility, security strategies are moving toward active trailer level protection. This model focuses on monitoring the cargo environment itself, identifying unusual activity early, and enabling trained personnel to intervene before a theft is completed.

This shift raises an important question: What would cargo protection look like if it were designed around the trailer itself rather than solely around the tractor?

At Remote Security Solutions, our team has been developing and refining a platform designed specifically for this challenge: the Transit Security Unit, or TSU. The TSU is a trailer mounted security platform built to operate independently from the tractor and provide continuous awareness of cargo movement and activity while shipments are in transit or staged. The system is designed to support early detection of suspicious behavior and faster response coordination when potential theft events occur.

After several rounds of internal development and testing, we are preparing for another live operational trial with a transportation client. This next phase will help validate how advanced trailer level monitoring can support fleet operators, shippers, and logistics providers in reducing cargo theft exposure.
